New Divine Comedy album out soon

17 Mar 2004

The “reformed” Divine Comedy’s new album ‘Absent Friends’ is due out on the 29th of this month, which I’m looking forward to. I really liked their last album, Regeneration, but it was a lot gloomier than previous DC outings, and I suspect this was due to it being a colaboration of the band rather than being mostly by Neil Hannon. After Regeneration Neil Hannon split the band, deciding he didn’t get into the band to do colaboration work, and eventually reformed the band with session players and with him back in creative control. It was good seeing him perform at the Edinburgh festival in 2002, where he seemed to be enjoying himself quite a lot.

From what I’ve heard of the new album, it’s a return to the likes of Casanova (my favourite DC album) and Liberation. Both the first single ‘Come Home Billy Bird’ and the track I heard previewed at the above mentioned concert ‘The Happy Goth’ show the old eccentric flair with a character driven song which Hannon does so well. I’ll definitely be heading Foppward on the 29th :)
