Planet Lab

16 Mar 2004

Planet lab is such a great idea. Basically, it’s a collection of machines hosted at various sites over the planet (see the map on the home page) at academic and industrial research sites, which allow people to do distributed systems/networking research over a wide scale. For example, I wanted to do some network delay measurements over a wide field. Thanks to planet lab, I simply added a few planet lab nodes to my experiment, and now my delay measurements include not only local nodes, but nodes in the USA and Japan, and it’s all set up at the click of a few buttons on a web interface.
