Inland Revenue have fun

24 Jun 2003

Ahh, the good old Inland Revenue, those whom collect your tax. In February I applied for a tax rebate based on the year 2001-2002, and this weekend I finally got a letter telling me they owed me a little over five hundred pounds. And another letter returning to me the various forms I’d sent them to prove what I’d earned and so on. And that was it. Now, call me foolish, but I was expecting them to actually give me the money back.

Turns out, they’re just a bunch of teases. After a phone conversation it turns out they send you the letter first and then a cheque about a fortnight later. One can only assume that they’re worried the shock of having money might be somewhat overwhelming, so they like to break it to you gently first. Weird, as previously they just sent you the cheque, and that was it. It’s all a bit frustrating as I’ve needed this money for an age. They also own me tax back from the year 2002-2003 which I enquired about in April, so Jobs only knows when I’ll hear about that, and then when I’ll actually get the money.

As an aside, I’ve been notionally working for the University for three weeks, but not seen a contract. Anyone care to take bets on whether I’ll get paid or not?
