New Apple goodness

24 Jun 2003

Ah, you know you’re a geek when you watch the Apple WWDC keynote on an IRC channel. Yesterday Apple announced their new (and long overdue) machine line up which gives them some top performing machines. These will ship with the new IBM PPC970 (aka the G5), which are 64 bit PowerPC processors based on IBM’s POWER4 architecture. They certainly seem to be the business, and I’ll keep my fingers crossed that I can convince my new boss when I eventually switch jobs to doing Netwrork stuff to get me one ;)

In addition, lots of new stuff was shown about Mac OS X 10.3 (aka Panther). Now, what interests me about this was built in X11 support. I’m think Apple’s stratergy RSN now may be to go after Sun. They’re shipping these high-end Unix boxen, which run X11, have a suite of easy to use features (unlike Sun’s CDE…), and the apps are beginning to flow (e.g., MatLab). It’ll be interesting to see if this happens over the next year or so. It’ll not be the first time they’ve tried to get into the workstation market, but it might be the first time they’ve had the products to make it work.
