Blur - Think Tank

20 May 2003

I’ve managed to listen to Blur’s latest album at last. Those who’ve been reading my blog (you people must have something better to be doing surely?) will know I was a little aprehensive about this album, as Blur are now a three some, rather than a foursome, having shed their guitarist Graham Coxon. Well, I’m pleased to say that their new album is really good. Despite losing a key part of their sound, the latest album is clearly blurish, but possibly a more lighter and gentler album than anything ot proceed it. Having listen to Graham Coxon’s first album, I can probably see where a lot of the angst in Blur came from before now. I think it’s definitely a case of the new stuff not being better, but just different. Some times it works for some people, some times it doesn’t (*cough*REM*cough* ;).

Anyway, the album itself. The first single off the album, Out Of Time, is a fantastic melody song, which reminds me of sixties songs like Windmills Of Your Mind. This is followed by the funky/rocky Crazy Beat (think a fun version of B.L.U.R.E.M.I.). Other standout tracks are Jets (a kind of almost jazz track), We’re Got A File On You (makes Song 2 seem long and relaxed ;). There’s not a jarring track on this album, which is unusual for a Blur album - most previous Blur albums have a sane, single safe, 50%, and then a more esoteric side to them. This album doesn’t skip a beat. Recommended.
