South Africa bans thin plastic bags

17 May 2003

According to the linked news story, SA are banning “thin” plastic carrierbags (by thin I assume they mean the ones that supermarkets give away, asopposed to the thicker, more durable ones they sell which are intended to bereused). This is a fantastic move. People in the UK are just too carrier bagfriendly, and will take them regardless of whether they need them. I try toavoid them as much as possible - otherwise they just mass up in my kitchen.

In Germany people tend to have fabric carrier bags that they keep and taketo the shops, and also the shops don’t like giving away bags. There was a story in the UK that the government were going to start taxing carrier bagsat some point, but I’ve not heard anything much about it of late.
