Fun with USB monitors

16 Jul 2007

At Ndiyo we go a pair of Samsung’s new USB driven monitors, the 940ux. You connect them over USB rather than a VGA or a DVI lead, and they don’t need another graphics card – thus they’re an easy way to expand an existing PC or Laptop. In a typical bout of geek photography you can see me unpacking mine here.

At Ndiyo, we’re interested in thin client technology, and whilst we usually focus on Ethernet based systems, USB is of interest to us too. We’ve been working on Linux X11 drivers that will work with the new USB monitors, and they make nice thin clients, albeit with limited range. The driver is still work in progress, but it’s pretty stable.

We’ve made a nice video to show you what we’ve been up to.
