Whilst clearing up my office at the weekend I decided to amuse myself by getting my old Blue & White PowerMac G3 up and running again. In part I was concerned with the state of the battery for the PRAM (it was dead, but not leaking thankfully, and is now replaced), but also I was getting frustrated trying to get emulated Macs running on my Apple Silicon mac. This later reason is part of my continuing interest in computer history as a way to understand paths not taken as computing got to where it is today, where for all the good there is, there’s a lot of stuff that is less good. It’s nice to use old systems like this to see both what we’ve gained and what we’ve lost along the way.
