The joy of open world games to me is the exploration and making your own fun, particularly when just hanging out with friends. This is partly why GTAV had such long legs - I never got that far into the single player experience, but they put so much into that sandbox that let you make your own fun, and so I have many many hours logged in that game, before eventually Rockstar spoiled my fun by making it hard to exist online without buying in game currency.

Conversely WatchDogs 2 was a fun single player game that I actually completed, but the open world just lacked the opportunity for you to make your own fun, and so it faded from our play sessions quite quickly. This is an exception to that rule: we managed to find a slide on the faux Google campus in the game and briefly made our own fun.
