Whiter than white, with working blue(tooth)

8 Jan 2007

I really like the Apple bluetooth keyboard that came with my iMac. It’s got a good feel, and there’s no cables, and it’s quite aesthetically pleasing. That is, until it gets mucky – my biscuit habit isn’t very keyboard friendly. After a year or so of use there was a lot of crap that had built up in the keyboard, more than simple shaking would remove. You can see it’s terrible state here:

A view of the white apple keyboard that has a clear plastic side tray, which you can see is full of crumbs.

So, cleaning was required, but we didn’t fancy removing all the keys, for fear of breaking them and the length of time it would take to disassemble and reassemble. A quick google produced the a vague notion that some people had used a dishwasher to clean their keyboard. Now, this keyboard has electronics in it, and normally one wants to avoid mixing, but so long as it’s not powered when you put it in water and let it dry properly it’ll probably work later… So, out came the batteries, and into the dish washer went the keyboard:

The keyboard is now placed upside down in an otherwise empty dish washer.

After a rinse cycle (no heated water to melt the keyboard thank you) the result was a shiny clean keyboard, as seen here:

The same view as the first picture, but now you can see there are no crumbs any more

The big question was whether it’d still work. Well, after leaving it to dry out for about 10 days (perhaps excessive, but there you go) I finally powered it back on and joy of joys, it still works! Thus far, at any rate. I now once again have a sparkling clean keyboard. Now, where did I leave those digestives…?
