Temptations
So, the garage let me know (well, I phoned them yet again, as they never proactively give me information (well, I bet they will when they want money)) that the 907 is still needing work, as the alternator they were sent for it is duff too. I’m beginning to think that even if this bike gets fixed, if I have this problem every time it needs work then perhaps I’m best looking for a replacement. I know it’s a classic, and deserving of love and care, but I think at the moment I’d like a bike I can actually ride…
I was in the BMW Motorrad store in Bishopbriggs today, looking at bikes. The new F800ST is the closest thing that BMW have to the 907 – an 800cc Sports Tourer which has been getting good press. £7495 gets you a F800ST with ABS, travel computer, panier mounts, etc. Nice. Sat on it and it was also so much lighter than the 907 – I suspect that even though the engine size is 100 cc less the modern engines and lower weight will more than compensate for that.
This is one of the more interesting things I need to consider. I’m currently trying to sort out finances, so I’m not sure whether I should be contemplating getting a new bike, but then I guess thus far I’ve been (questionably) lucky being able to get vehicles second hand within the family. At some point I have to buy something with a loan. It’s all weird to contemplate for the first time. But over five years or so the loan rates are affordable. But then I guess I should be trying to save for a house, but the idea of doing that on my current salary and rent seems mad given Cambridge house prices :/
For now I’ll wait and see how much the 907 costs when (or, indeed, if) it comes back, the poor thing. Perhaps a drive up on a Ducati to return it to my Dad (who’d try selling it and split the costs for repairs) and a drive down on a BMW would be a fun way to spend a weekend. :)
Basically, never let me into shops that sell expensive things.
