Putting the penguin in the AppleTV
A little while back I mentioned I was in the process of modifying an AppleTV. Well, I’m pleased to report that the operation was successful – I now have an AppleTV on my desk running Ubuntu Linux, and it seems to run quite happily.
If you want to try such madness, then I recommend the instructions over at Mythic Beasts. I went for the taking apart the AppleTV option, as that didn’t require me to mess about about with setting up TFTP and such on our network, but I can assure you it’s quite a painless process if you’re moderately competent. So if you need a little quiet linux server then you can do worse than getting an AppleTV and installing linux on it yourself.
Many thanks to Pete Stevens for alerting me to such possibilities!
