Paris for the palette
We’ve just spent a a few days in Paris, which has to be by far my favourite city to loiter in. This time, rather than staying in a hotel we stayed in a wonderful top floor apartment near Les Halles on a quite back street.
We chose this area based on our previous trips – not because Les Halles is convenient for places like the Pompidou centre, or Notre Dame (which it is), but mostly because of Rue Montorgueil. We’d happened across Rue Montorgueil on our first trip to Paris, and it immediately made us lament that we were staying in a hotel – it’s an amazing street crammed full of small markets and shops which in turn are crammed full of some of the most amazing fresh produce, like these chanterelle mushrooms I scored on the first day:
There’s stores for everything on Rue Montorgueil, from fruit and veg, nuts, meat, fish, cheese, wine, chocolates; all fresh, and all in amazing varieties (at least to someone used to UK markets). It’s a foodie’s delight. So this time when heading back to Paris we ensured we’d have somewhere with a kitchen and in easy reach of Rue Montorgueil. The only disappointment was that you can’t sample all the produce in just a few short days, but that just means we’ll need to go back.
