Rendezvous

10 Apr 2003

Yesterday we had a dude from Apple’s Worldwide Developer Technical Support team, called Quinn, here explaining the wonders of Rendezvous, Apple’s take on Zeroconf network configuration. It’s all pretty whizzy. Basically you ask over the network for services and get a list of things on the local network back, and also when you plug a device into a local network it automatically works out an IP address for you and finds stuff. For instance, during the talk I opened my laptop and joined the demo wavelan network Quinn was running and my machine got asssigned an IP address and then found Quinn’s iChat client and connected.

Anyway, I can see me wasting more time on this. If only X Windows servers advertised themselves over Rendezvous I’d add support for it in osx2x :) Below is a pic of my Rendezvous service browser. Getting this working only took about 30 minutes.
