Sleeping With Ghosts

24 Mar 2003

I confess, I’m a music junkie. I love buying new albums (not as much asNeil perhaps ;). Getting the case, listening to that album for the first time, it’s all part of it. Writing up has put a bit of a dent in my music habit, as I’m broke, but I got my first album today for five months (since the excellent A New Morning by Suede), and I haven’t felt the urge to buy a new album once I’dgot used to not having money, but today a new Placebo album was out, so I hadto break my fast. It was just like the old days - I still get a thrill from getting new music. I don’t know what the RIAA put in my corn flakes, but itworks. It’s hard to articulate my music addiction, but there just is a need in me to get new music. I really can’t explain it.

Anyway, Sleeping With Ghosts is Placebo’s latest album, and it’s top. It’s been a good first listen, and I’m not as sold on it was I am Black Markey Music, but when BMM came out at first I thought it was good but not as good as Without You I’m Nothing, so I’ll give it a few listens before trying to compare it. But it is excellent. Brian Malko has such an excellent voice, and the songs sound so musically good, swithcing between the heavy guitars of The Bitter End to the beautiful melody of Centerfolds (a typical Placebo end of album affair). There’s not a duff track here IMHO, which makes for a perfect batting record for Placebo. I’m just now twice as upset that I failed to get tickets to go and see them live.

Oh, and another point - there’s no 20 minutes of silence before the last track! Thank you Placebo! It was fun in the early 90’s, but with iTunes it’s a right pain in the arse :)
