Good trains? Where will it all end?
I was amazed today, as I found a train service that not only carried me to where I wanted to be within a reasonable time, but also offered some useful extra for geeks like myself. Firstly, they had power sockets for laptops. This is good, as my iBook’s battery is not up to the entire journey like it once might have been. But secondly, they had on train wifi, and get this, it was at a reasonable price. I kid ye not. So, having dashed out the house without having time to check my email this morning, I paid 2.95 for 35 minutes of Internet access from the train. It’s very simple to set up, and the performance, whilst not exactly blistering (ping times of 1 second back to the computer lab), was more than enough for email checking and a quick wonder over the web. Anyway, well done to GNER for that - I gather it’s a trial service at the moment, and I hope it’s a success.
In addition of Internet access, anyone can access an uptodate status page showing you where you are without having to pay. The pic below shows the train I was on heading to Doncaster, at 11.07 am, and I had 9 minutes odd of Internet access time left. This is such a good idea, I’m surprised it’s available in this country :)
