computer woes

14 Nov 2004

Well, last weekend I put in my iBook for repair, as the HD failed on it a while ago, and replacing the HD in a laptop isn’t something for the fainthearted. I got the iBook back this weekend, which was not only good, but timely, as the HD in my PowerMac G3/400 at home died also while the iBook was away. Let me take this as a moment to remind you all to back up your data - HD failures happen! Thankfully we have a oldish PC running XP which tided us over. A bit of cygwin, firefox and thunderbird, and XP isn’t too bad. But I am glad to have my iBook back.

What to do with the G3 PowerMac then. The simple solution is to just replace the HD, which is something much easier to do that it is with an iBook, but I’m thinking that I really want to replace it some time soon. So I’ve been drawing up plans for that, and I’ll see how that goes. I’ve been looking on eBay at how much old G3 Blue & White PowerMacs go for, and they hold their value very well. the auctions I’ve been watching have had them go for between 90 and 180 pounds. So regardless, the G3 PowerMac here is getting a new HD and then going eBay wards to try and help fund some of the replacement.
