The Village

Saw The Village last night, the latest film by the dude who did the Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs. I’ve not seen Signs yet, but the other two were good (well, Unbreakable wasn’t nearly as good as Sixth Sense, but wasn’t bad either). Anyway, The Village is very much in the same form - mystery/thriller with a twist in the tail. This time he’s added a bit of the horror genre to the mix. I can’t say too much about it without spoiling the plot, but the film centres on a small 1890’s town in a valley surrounded by woodland inhabitted by “those they don’t speak of”, who have essentially trapped the village. The story focuses around Joaquin Phoenix’s character, who wants to brave the wood to get urgently needed supplies from other towns, and the blind girl in the town, played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Bryce is excellent in the film (as is Joaquin), I don’t think Shyamalan could have cast anyone better for that part. Anyway, it’s a good film, and I recommend it. It’s only let down slightly by the way the ending is structure, but it’s still a great film, full of good acting, suspense, and the trademark twist at the end.
