Watch out goats

I’m currently reading an introductory book on the subject fo Game Theory, which is a maths thing used to try and work out how a set of people will resolve a competition. Not the world’s most exciting topic, but the book did have me laughing out loud the other day with a classic example of the mad assumptions you some times see being made.

There was an example in the book that was to do with a set of farmers each trying to estimate how many goats they should let graze on a communial field, without knowing how many goats the other farmers would bring. To make the math work, the following assumption was made, and I quote verbatim: “Assume that goats are continuously divisible.” :)

Now, I don’t doubt that goats can be divided contnuously, but I don’t think you need to worry about htem grazing after a certain point…
