Although on the mac you’re generally spoiled for IM software with iChat, it only supports AIM, and by most accounts the AIM software for Windows is a bit shonky, so they all use MSN as the IM network of choice. I’ve finally caved and got myself an MSN account (the address is my old email address at Glasgow dcs), and moved from iChat to Adium X, a multi-protocol IM client for Mac OS X. It’s still work in progress, and can be flaky at times, but it’s quite nice for most stuff, and lets me agnostic as to what IM protocol is being used. Worth a look.
