Jamie Cullum - Twentysomething
You can tell I’m getting on, I look forward to Parkie’s Sunday Supplement, which I became addicted to since the first time I listened to it driving down from Aberdeen from Neil’s wedding. One of the good things about this show is that Parkie plays a lot of jazz stuff. One of my favourites from this has to be Jamie Cullum, who’s jazz is very lively and fun and full of energy.
His current album, Twentysomething, is half covers and half new stuff, and is really good. The new songs, like the title track Twentysomething, show that JC can not only perform jazz well, but also write it well. He does energetic covers of standards such as I Get A Kick Out Of You and I Could Have Danced All Night, giving them a modern flavour. Hidden in there is also a Jimi Hendrix cover, and much to my surprise, a Jeff Buckley cover too, and both make the jazz transition well (though there wasn’t that much to change for the Buckley cover). Anyway, a good fun album.
Oh, and two things from the flip notes on the album. Firstly, he thanks Parkie, and it’s amazing to see that Radio 2 seems to have become quite a cultural influence, filling in for Radio 1 I guess. The other thing is that they’re advertising official ring-tones - dear me. Let’s take a wonderfully dynamic and rich performance and put it onto a mobile phone. Ah, kids today have no appreciation…
