dyndns.org

They’ve been around for a while, but I’ve only just had cause to use their services. dyndns.org will let you have a hostname mapped onto a machine that’s assigned a dynamic IP address. All you need to do is run a small client program on your machine that tells the dyndns service when your IP address updates, and it’ll keep its DNS records up to date. Thus I can now simply use a hostname (e.g., foobarwibble.dyndns.org (no, that’s not what I used :)) to ssh into my machine at home, rather than trying to remember the assigned IP address that day.
