The Darkness - Permission To Land

12 Dec 2003

I remember the first time I saw The Darkness. I wondered what the heck these guys thought they were up to - did they not see how out of date they were. But then they did some song with an amazing guitar solo, which the lead dude performed on top of Jules Holland’s grand piano (this was on Later…, and Mr Holland wasn’t amused :) - the sheer over the topness and campness of The Darkness is what it’s about. You can’t take this seriously, and it’s just bloody good fun.

Anyway, through the joys of iTunes sharing, I’ve been listening to The Darkness’s album, Permission To Land, and it’s top stuff. Lots of over the top eighties metal, though with a more modern set of production values. There is the gem of the album, I Believe in a Thing Called Love, but there’s not a dull track here - it’s all over the top fun stuff. The lead dude has an amazingly good voice (I guess this is what you get if you cross the style of something like Van Halen with the voice of Jeff Buckley :), and is great on the guitar to boot. Anyway, it’s all harmless fun, so if you like a good bit of rock and roll now and then, I suggest you pick this one up.
