I've gone 'banana's' apparently

22 Aug 2003

This is filed under misc as there isn’t (yet) a “very irate” section.

According to PM on Radio 4 last night the OED is considering letting “Banana’s” be a valid plural for “Banana”, throwing basic grammar out the window. Okay, so my written English sucks, but I still think this is a horrible thing. Their argument is that bad apostrophe usage is so common that they should just go with the language as it’s used. Whilst I agree that trying to regiment a language is an impossible thing (see France and Germany), I think tweaking the language as people are too lazy to think is a bit poor. Time to join these dudes I fear.
