Bluetooth decay

27 May 2003

Got sent this by Neil today, probably because it just about sums up his problems with Bluetooth. Neil and I both have Mitsumi bluetooth dongles, and Neil’s had nothing but trouble with his, trying to get his wife’s Nokia phone to communicate properly with their Windows XP laptop. Neil’s not the only one; another friend of mine has tried to get his XP laptop to talk to his Sony Ericsson T68 with variable results. The flip side is that I’ve had very little trouble with getting my T68i to do everything it should with my Apple iBook. Apple have obviously put some effort into this, and the T68i seems to be an Apple favourite phone. But then a friend with an iMac and a Nokia phone had problems…

Thus, as the article says, it’s a mess, and althought the underlying protocol for communication is fine, a set of higher level standards for device level interactions is needed. Then everyone can be as lucky as me ;)

Update: Martin, the dude with the iMac and the Nokia phone, has told me that it’s simply a case of his phone being too new a model (what a show off, eh?) and that iSync should support it in the next release.
