New Blur stuff
Saw the new reduced Blur on tele last night, performing stuff from their new album. Last year Blur booted out Graham Coxon, their guitarist, which is a major move for a band that is dominated by their guitar sounds, particularly those as distinctive as Graham’s. Indeed the first few seconds of the first blur single (There’s No Other Way) is a great Coxon moment. He’s a great guitarist, and Blur worked well (IMHO) like that sound wise.
Anyway, as you may have guessed, I had a large degree of sceptisism about the new Blur album coming out sans Coxon, and I think I was both right and wrong. The two tracks they played were lacking something, the pace and edge I think the older Blur tracks had thanks to the distinctive guitar work of Coxon. But the songs were good, so I’ll probably buy the album. Damon Alburn has such a good voice, and the lyrical content seemed good. It was just lacking something though, like there was a hole in the song. Perhaps I was just noticing it because I was lookign for it, but I think they’ve become a touch blander now. Ah well.
