Norfolk tour '08

24 Feb 2008

Yesterday we went around Norfolk’s northern coast line, then down through Thetford forest. A10->A149->A148->A1065. It’d make a good day’s trip by any mode of transport, though you need to wait until you’ve passed King’s Lynn for the better views. Here’s the bike at Brancaster Beach:

Brancaster Beach is busy, but never too busy. The hordes seem to stop at Hunstanton, or keep going onto Wells. It wasn’t really beach weather, but I find good company and a beach are always a fine combination.

For lunch we took advantage of the offer the FT is currently running, and went to Fishes, in Burnham Market. Even sans offer it would make a very nice place to have lunch. The food was really very good, even on the limited offer menu, and the atmosphere nice and relaxing.

A picture of two fancy desserts that probably contain way too much sugar but were very nice.

Further along the coast we stopped at Salthouse Beach. When I first discovered Salthouse Beach, which is a wonderfully pebble covered beach behind a man made ridge. Laura and I sat there for ages on the warm pebbles, listening to the sound of the waves bashing the stones against each other in a very relaxing sort of way. Unfortunately yesterday it had been taken over by people fishing – there was even a van selling espresso there, so we didn’t stay long. On the way out I had fun negotiating the deep puddles on bike:

From Salthouse we started out way home, down the through Thetford Forest, just stopping briefly to stretch legs and sip coffee. The roads were nice a quite down this stretch, excellent Ulysses territory. You’re saved from pictures, as with roads like that, who wants to stop?
