Mmmm, Digital Flapjack

5 Jul 2009

Whilst Camvine has been going along nicely (look out for some cool announcements coming up soon!), in my spare time I’ve been trying to do a little more Mac coding for fun. Apple have been doing some really cool stuff for developers since my last venture into Mac programming five odd years ago, so it’s been quite good fun seeing what they’ve been up to.

At the same time, I’ve decided as a learning experience to go through the process of setting up a company under which to sell any of my Mac output, oddly named Digital Flapjack. Given Camvine is where I dedicate most my working time, Digital Flapjack is very much a side project, but it’s been an interesting process to go through: setting up a UK Limited Company, sorting out paperwork, finding a way to accept payments from people, and so on. If Digital Flapjack can do enough to cover its costs I’ll be happy, and if not I’ve learned a reasonable amount just getting this far.

So, having finally found an odd hour or two to tidy things up in the last week, I’m pleased to say Digital Flapjack has just put out its first product! ServerBar is a small utility that lets you keep an eye on a bunch of Unix type servers (be they Mac OS X, Linux, etc.). ServerBar is something I’ve wanted for the Mac for ages since I moved from Linux, but nothing out there quite did what I wanted, so it was my first project when I got back into playing with the Mac. It’s a niche product, but I’ve learned before that thanks to the Internet what appears to be niche to you can be useful to a lot of people!.

Over time there’ll probably be a couple of other small things to come out of DigitalFlapjack – this first one has been a long time coming as I needed to do the tedious admin work before I could release it – I’ve been using ServerBar myself for about 5 months :)
