Harleys at the gate!
Yesterday L and I were up at King’s Lynn to visit a friend from my EE days who’s about to move to the US for a while to teach physics. After departing King’s Lynn (which I’m sure has some nice bits, just we didn’t seem to find much sign of them), we decided to head a bit further into Norfolk to find somewhere to go for a walk. To that end L ably directed us from the pillion seat to Castle Rising.
The castle is definitely worth a visit. It’s small, but that means you’ve got some chance of imagining how it functioned were all the wood not rotted away. There’s still quite a bit you can walk around, and there’s also a free audio guide should you want one, though we decided to show ourselves around instead. In addition to the castle the landscape near the castle still shows the original defences, so you get a real feel for the small encampment.
As we pulled up to the castle we were greeted with a sight normally reserved for Harley Davidson dealerships – fortyish Harley Davidsons parked up in the excessively chromey way…
It turns out the Surrey HOGs were having a weekend in Norfolk. We had a brief chat with some of the group – I think we got away with it as my Buell has a Harley engine in it :) I got a panorama of the scene, but only after a ten or so had departed for the hotel (click for bigger):
