After the wide open plains of Nevada, you pass into the forested Sierra mountains which have a quietness about them that I find hard to define.

The California Zephyr has a great observation cart where you can get views of your surroundings either in the company of others or in a more solitary seat that faces directly out to the side with a large window so you can just contemplate the passing landscape without distraction. I’d love to go back and do the entire Chicago to Oakland run one day.

The Prairie City Donut Holes we’d carted around with us since New Mexico, so we really just had to eat them before the end of the trip :)
