When I took work trips to the US, at first I’d stay in the designated corporate hotel with all my colleagues, but I soon realised that really I wanted to be able to disengage in the evenings, and to stay somewhere where it was easier to walk around. So despite it adding a drive to my day, I switched from the regular hotel to staying up in Menlo Park, where my partner had lived for a year when she worked for AT&T labs before the first bubble burst.
I found this helped a lot - you can walk around Menlo Park, up to Palo Alto perhaps, there’s the cal train, and it gave me an excuse to be myself in the evenings beyond the often fraught meetings of the day.
Not a great picture, but I have a lot of photos from walking around Menlo Park in the evenings from those days, and they remind me of the better parts of those times.
