Day 58 of 365.
Today’s photo is about the tone, rather than the photo itself. I’m a big fan of the idea of trying to make digital photos look less good and capture more of the emotion of a scene. There are times when digital accuracy is fantastic, but there are times when what you want to do is get across how something feels, and there the old style camera effects come in to play. It can (and often is) overdone of course, but I think used on the right photo the results can be wonderful.
A good example is in giving something a polaroid look, you’ve used a shorthand that indicates nostalgia/memories. Instagram and Hipstamatic for the iPhone capitalise on this.
The reason I posted this photo today is that it got a wonderful 70s/kodak film tone to it that I love, and it’s actually unprocessed in any way, it just came out the camera like this (other than cropped slightly). Which is both great (I got it, and can reference it) and annoying (in that it was a fluke :). I’ve often tried to get a tone like this by fiddling in software, but never managed to get it right. Today I captured the tone I often aspire to, and it kinda goes with the scene, even if the scene isn’t particularly special.
