Yesterday I visited the Cambridge Museum of Technology, which is an old steam powered pump station by the river cam. A few times a year they fire them all up, and I went with a visiting friend to look at the machines. My top learning is that even though the furnace is in another building, the machines radiate a lot of heat from the steam driving them.
Photography wise I didn’t get much, despite the wonderful array of machines - it was a very damp day, and I was battling lens fogging and spectacles fogging up, and it was quite dark in there. Still, I’m glad I got this shot which shows the wonderful colourful machines.
As my friend Sophie pointed out, you can see why people are attracted to the steam age from this, though I suspect given how much people complain about their laptops getting hot, in practice steam punk would not be as pleasant to work with as people hope :)
