This is one of the more modest churches of Nantes, Église Sainte-Croix, which has a nice bell tower, and is also where science fiction author Jules Verne was baptised. The reason we first went to Nantes was to see the amazing Jules Verne inspired les machines de l’île, so his spirit lives on in the city where I guess it started.
I like this photo not just because it reminds me of the narrow streets of Nantes well, with interesting buildings lurking around every other corner, but also it’s one of the few times where I think I’ve shot portrait in wide angle and had it work out.
Originally I processed this in black and white (which is how I shoot) and it didn’t really pop, but then I tried it in colour and bam, there it was for me. I like the chimney shadow in the top left for some reason - perhaps because you get to see more of the city than is just in the frame.
